Iphone 2.0 my top 5 apps

14 07 2008

I’ve been using iPhone 2.0 for a few days now much to my delight, here’s a rundown of my 5 top apps!

5.Phone Saber

Quite frankly this is a perfect example of app design for the iphone.

Yes, it’s a concept app and yes, it’s just a skin for the accelerometer but it is soo much fun.

Now I realise that i’m a grown man and should probably be using the iPhone for serious, business related activities but there is a definite satisfaction from waving your phone around like a jedi and watching the awe/bemusement of friends and onlookers alike. It’s free so go get one, you never know when you might be looking at a duel!

4. Facebook

I know you’re on Facebook too, don’t lie!

I remember thinking how sad Facebook was and that i’d never join up – myspace was where all the cool kids hung out. Then I caved and since then had be clawing back at the life which had been stolen by Facebook and it’s bizarre adictiveness.

Just as I began to feel like a real person again they release an App for the iPhone – it’s jut like the website though…what’s the point?

The point (for me anyway) is the ability to take photos and have them automatically updated on your profile without all the faff of uploading and posting when you get home. Now you can photoblog much more naturally and (i feel an indulgent guilt at saying this) check that your friends are all doing ok while on the move.

3. LifeChurch.tv

Finally a decent free Bible app!

LifeChurch.tv holds (links to) multiple translations so you can read and compare scriptures in different translations without carrying a bag full of books with you. Navigation is clean and simple, there is a nice extra feature in that you can read othr peoples thoughts and musings on every verse which can be interesting (occasionally).

I’m genuinely happy that someone has put this together. I realise that it’d be unfeasible but the only downside to this app is that you require a live internet connection to keep reading (maybe it’s time for the iPhone 3G).

2. Midomi

More of a fun way to kill a bit of time that a useful tool to me this one.

Midomi is a way of finding out the name of that song you’ve got stuck in your head or the track on the radio…but Midomi really comes to life with the “Sing or Hum” feature where you (or your friends) get to do a kareoke style sing-along into your mic, hoping that their song gets recognised.

I tried to get a result for Beastie Boys “Brass Monkey” in my best Mike D impersonation possible and Midomi fed back as GZA (fine) and “Leanne Rimes” (WHAT!?!). I guess practice makes perfect. Lots of fun to be had either way.

1. Super Monkey Ball

Classic, a definite classic. Super Monkey Ball is tuned to perfection, great fun and a fantastic display of just what is possible with…a phone game.

My only issue (and this is no bad word against the game) is that i’m not great at it and although i’ve finished all the levels on the first world it won’t let me pass because yo’ve got to collect every banana and not fall off/run out of time…in 1 go! I guess i’d better get practicing.

This is the only non-free app in my top 5 but well worth a buy!
