Joe’s London Eye – Saturday

24 01 2009

I just saw an advert on the tube for Humanism/Athism/Dawkins, I think they’re beginning to doubt their own doubts from the copy which read “there probably isn’t a god. stop worrying and enjoy your life”. Correct me if I’m wrong but isn’t athism the belief in nothing, or the lack of belief in anything? So ‘probably’ probably wasn’t the best wording to use – am I right?

Apparently the ad was paid for with public money, I hope it wasn’t mine, either way it hasn’t been the strangest thing I’ve seen this evening. A man was just fishing through the bins on the train and throwing newspapers and takeaway containers around in an agressive manner threatening people on the train with…I suppose ketchup and the financial times. I decided to walk away to avoid any unwanted confrontations and have found a seat in another carriage.

The story of the good Samaritan came to mind, I’ve seen a lot of people begging for money on the tube/streets this week and like everyone else have listened to music and looked at the floor to avoid eye-contact and an awkward conversation, mostly due to guilt i guess.

Back to the good samaritan, Jesus said that when we fed the hungry and gave to the poor we were serving him. So should I have given to those that were begging and (more importantly) is it my place to decide if it’s a genuine need? I know there are many counter arguments but for the sake if this entry I want to challenge at least my own thinking. If the athism poster was correct and there was no God, and I shouldn’t worry, just go about and enjoy my life, wouldn’t the world be a sad place.

I believe there is a God and am happy to say so, infact we get on well. Whatever your beliefs are, consider the poor, the hungry and those in need, one simple gesture could make a massive difference in this big cold world and you never know the extent of your actions, I have benefitted from the generosity of strangers before and those things have remained with me. If you get the chance to serve and feel that you can offer something to someone in need then go for it, there’s no public money for that!
