Cut & Paste: 3D Design Category – My test round

28 02 2009

Fantastic news, I was shortlisted for the test rounds of the 2009 Cut & Paste competition’s “3D Design” category. My test round was yesterday and because I couldn’t make it down to London we did the round via ichat and a video stream of the computer monitor.

This was the shortest 20 mins of my life, trying desperately to put a 3D image together to fit the theme ‘Bliss’. I opted to create a park scene with a row of benches along a path under some trees. You can see from the video file below (sped up a fair bit) how I achieved the scene – I am pretty happy with my result. All being well i’ll be competing on 4th April at The Coronet Theatre, London against other high-flying superstar 3D artists. For more info on the madness that ensues check out the Cut & Paste site here.

It’s a fantastic feeling to be involved in such a high tension competition and to work so intensely for such a relatively short amount of time. I will keep you posted on how I progress.

Video Experiment – Droste Effects with a card.

28 02 2009

Bit of experimentation today, using the “hand holding a card” shot that I filmed for the canvas films clip this month i’ve keyed out the card and used a pixel-bending plugin to achieve a droste effect on the footage. The effect is similar to but not the same as the “video echo” effect that we’re all aware of when you point a camera at a screen of the cameras output. The footage is actually spiralled to infinity*, check the edge of the card and you ‘ll see what I mean. Admittedly the footage is less than inspiring but the effect has a lot of scope so you may soon see some more posts experimenting with similar products.

Canvas Visuals – Live Music

27 02 2009

More good stuff on the subject of Canvas branding clips. This time it’s a clip to advertise the live music that we’ve got performing on the night – for this month we’ve got the Ragamuffins, Stealingsheep and A Cup of Tea. A good blend of accoustic and electronica. This visuals sequence has audio amplitude levels for bass and treble dynamically driving particle strams with uneven turbulence to give the effect of a cool glowing 3D graphic EQ. It was then comped in 3D with layers showing the names of the artists that are playing.

Canvas Visuals – Films Showing

26 02 2009

New branding sequence for Canvas tomorrow night. Part of the video showcase and bar visuals sequence. I filmed my hand holding a piece of coloured card, keyed the card out and motion tracked the video sequence with corner pins. The hand transitions were keyed manually.

Final touches to the AnotherMedia website today as Lucy works her magic on the html. Dave is Liverpool royalty with names such as Mellowtone, AnotherMedia, Ragz, Redhouse Originals and collaborations with Africa Oye, CALM and 3345 Parr St under his belt to name but a few. We’ve been working on the new Another Media site, keeping it simple and clean for simplicity of use with a focus on their activities. The site went live on Friday last week – check it here.

Back in the day pt.4 – Joe Skully

22 02 2009

joe_skullyNot many can claim this, but Joe Skully (Neighbours) cooked me a shrimp on his Barbeque. That’s right, he threw another shrimp on his Barbie! To be honest I don’t really remember why or how this was happening but Joe Skully (I should really find out his real name) was in Bradford and on the University ampitheatre cooking food on a barbeque. Either way it was a great atmosphere and the food tasted very nice indeed. That was one of the oddest I had in Bradford I think. Might have been worth brushing my hair though.

Back in the day pt.3 – Brian Blessed

No matter how many times you hear him say “Gordon’s Alive!?!” it doesn’t get boring. Myself and friend Mat Overrton were Brian Blessed’s tour guide’s for the day as part of his honorary degree at the University of Bradford. Being the complete extravert that he is, Brian wouldn’t let a photo get taken without trying to make me laugh – this was the best one! He was on fire for the whole day, jumping and shouting all over the place, scaring people with his big booming voice and overly charismatic personality – a fantastic day by all accounts! We took Brian to the National Museum for a tour and for a few photo opportunities, absolutely brilliant. He had a real interest in the performing arts and “Theatre in the Mill” and really inspired the budding actors that were working on a new home-written play. Great day!

Back in the day pt.2 – Julian Glover, Ken Wallis & Caroline Monroe

20 02 2009

Slightly better dressed than the Peel incident this time. Here I am with Julian Glover (Star Wars, James Bond, Indiana Jones etc..) at the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television at the launch of a James Bond exhibition. Being editor of the university magazine “Scrapie” I was able to attend the sit-down dinner with a few names from the Bond Franchise. I shared a table with Julian, Caroline Monroe and Ken Wallis (the engineer and pilot of little nelly). It was a great event and I had an absolute ball talking all things Bond with these guys as well as chatting about my degree and world domination plans :) My only real regret here was not getting a better camera, I took a second hand SLR without a flash, mostly to look the part, unfortunately this meant that I couldn’t see what was being shot and the photos of Ken and Caroline are pretty dark. Definitely a once in a lifetime experience – although I hope not!
